  • What is Ventolin?

Ventolin is a type of reliever inhaler for people with asthma. It is sometimes referred to as the blue inhaler. Ventolin is used when a person’s asthma is triggered and they experience symptoms such as wheezing or tightness across the chest.

  • How long does it take for albuterol to work?

The onset of action for Ventolin is usually quite rapid, typically within a few minutes after inhalation. It reaches its peak effect within about 30 to 60 minutes after administration.

It's important to note that the exact time it takes for Ventolin to work can vary among individuals. Factors such as the severity of the respiratory condition, the individual's responsiveness to the medication, and proper inhaler technique can influence how quickly the effects are felt.

  • How is a Ventolin inhaler used?

Good inhaler technique is an important part of managing your asthma:

    • Stand or sit upright when using your inhaler.
    • Remove the mouthpiece cover and check inside and outside to make sure that the
the mouthpiece is clean and free of objects.
    • Shake the inhaler 4 or 5 times to ensure that the contents of the inhaler are evenly
      mixed.
    • Hold the inhaler upright with your thumb on the base and your fingers on the top of
the canister. Your hand should be making a ‘C’ shape.
    • Breathe out as far as is comfortable. Do not breathe in again yet.
    • Place the mouthpiece in your mouth between your teeth. Close your lips around it but
      do not bite.
    • Start to breathe in through your mouth. Just after starting to breathe in, press down
on the top of the canister to release a puff of medicine. Do this while still breathing in
      steadily and deeply.
    • Hold your breath, take the inhaler from your mouth and your finger from the top of the
inhaler. Continue holding your breath for a few seconds, or as long as is comfortable.

Repeat as directed by your doctor. Always replace the mouthpiece cover straight away to keep dust out.

  • How to use a Ventolin Inhaler

You'll experience fewer side effects from your medicine if you use the proper inhaler method. If you don't use the right technique, medicine can stick to the back of your throat, tongue, or mouth. This can lead to oral thrush. Side symptoms include a painful tongue or throat, a hoarse voice, and a cough.

It's a good idea to rinse your mouth with water after using a steroid inhaler to remove any medicine that may have become stuck in your mouth.

It may also be good to use a spacer with your Ventolin Inhaler. As a result, spacers can help the medicine get to your lungs faster, minimising the risk of side effects.
