What is Imigran Nasal Spray?

Imigran Nasal Spray is a triptan treatment used to treat migraine headaches. Imigran contains an active ingredient known as Sumatriptan, which is highly effective in relieving a migraine attack. A migraine can be more painful than a regular headache.

When you have migraine symptoms you may experience manifestations such as nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound.

The exact causes of migraines are not fully understood, but some common triggers that trigger migraines include certain foods or physiological issues such as dark chocolate, cheese, and drinks like alcohol and caffeinated beverages, along with stress, fatigue, and hunger.

Imigran nasal spray is generally a well tolerated triptan and is available in a variety of dosage forms such as tablet, nasal spray or injection.

This medication belongs to a class of drugs known as triptans. Triptans work by constricting the widened blood vessels that cause migraine, leading to faster relief from pain and nausea compared to tablets.

How does Imigran nasal spray work for migraine relief?

A migraine progresses through four stages: prodrome, where pre-signs such as mood changes, fatigue, or food cravings appear; aura, experienced by some with visual disturbances or tingling sensations; the attack, marked by severe one-sided headache, nausea, and sensitivity to light or sound; and postdrome, a recovery phase with exhaustion and mental fog. 

When a migraine triggers, the blood vessels in your brain can temporarily expand or widen, which contributes to the pain, throbbing, and other symptoms.

At this point, Imigran comes with the active drug sumatriptan, a type of triptan medication. Triptans work by narrowing the blood vessels in the brain (which are believed to swell during migraine episodes) and blocking pain signals from the nerves. This helps relieve migraine symptoms more quickly. It should not be used beforehand or to prevent migraine attacks.

How to use Imigran Nasal Spray 

Imigran nasal spray should be used as soon as you feel a migraine start. Spray once in a nostril, and it should work within 15 minutes.

Sumatriptan nasal spray cannot be used to prevent migraine attacks, only to treat them, and should only be used as directed by your doctor.

Step-by-step guide on how to use Sumatriptan Nasal Spray 

• ✅ Begin by opening the blister to remove the nasal spray. Do not open the blister if you are not using the spray.
  
  
• ✅ Sit in a comfortable position
  
  
• ✅ Blow your nose to unblock it
  
  
• ✅ Hold the nasal spray with your finger and thumb
  
  
• ✅ Using your finger to block one of your nostrils let's say the left nostril
  
  
• ✅ Place the nozzle of the nasal spray on your right nostril, that is the unblocked nostril 
  
  
• ✅ Breath out gently through your mouth,
  
  
• ✅ Close your mouth and breathe in gently 
  
  
• ✅ Press the plunger slowly but strongly with your thumb and release a full dose if the spray into your mouth
  
  
• ✅ Remove the spray from your nostril and dispose of it
  
  
• ✅ Your nostril may be wet, and also you may notice an unpleasant taste in your mouth which is normal.

Imigran Nasal Spray dosage 

A spray of IImigran Nasal Spray contains a single dose of the treatment. Below are the recommended doses.

• ❇️ Adults between the age of 18-65 should take one 10mg to 20mg of the spray in one nostril 
  
  
• ❇️ Children between 12 to 17 years should take one 10mg to 20 mg of the spray in one nose.
  
  
• ❇️ Imigran Nasal Spray should not be used by children under 12 years and adults over 65 years.

Taking 2 20mg of the spray in less than 24 hours is taken as an overdose.

Who should not use Imigran Nasal Spray?

⚠️ You should not use Imigran Nasal Spray if :

• You have liver disease
  
  
• You have heart-related problems, chests in, or a history of heart attack 
  
  
• You have high blood pressure 
  
  
• You have a history of stroke or mini-stroke 
  
  
• You are allergic to Imigran Nasal Spray ingredients 
  
  
• You are taking migraine treatments that have triptan, methysergide, or ergotamine
  
  
• You have taken antidepressants (monoamine oxidase inhibitors )in the last 2 weeks.

Imigran Nasal Spray interactions 

There are drugs, herbal medicines, or supplements that you should take while using Imigran spray.

These drugs and herbal treatments may interfere with the effectiveness of the treatment. Always inform your doctor if you are under any treatment before taking Imigran Nasal Spray.

Below are some of the important interactions.

❇️ St Johns Wort. Taking herbal supplements or treatments containing St John's wort may trade the severity of the side effects 

❇️ SSRIs (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors )or SNRIs(Serotonin Noradrenaline Reuptake Inhibitors). These are treatments used to treat depression. Taking Imigran alongside these medicines can cause Serotonin syndrome.

❇️ Triptans /5HT1 receptor agonist .Triptans are used to treat migraines. You should not use them alongside Imigran. Also, do not use Imigran if you have recently used a Triptan treatment. Triptan treatments include naratriptan, Rizatriptan, and Zolmitriptan.

❇️ Ergotamine. These are treatments used to treat migraine. Do not use Imigran while taking Ergotamine medicines.
MAOIs(Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors) are medicines used to treat depression. Do not use Imigran if you have taken MAOIs in the last two weeks.

❇️ If you are breastfeeding, you should wait until 12 hours are over before breastfeeding your baby. It is proven that sumatriptan treatment is secreted into your baby's milk. Within 12 hours always discard the breastmilk.

❇️ You may encounter drowsiness after taking Sumatriptan treatment, avoid driving or using machinery after experiencing this side effect.

How to  Store Imigran Nasal Spray 

Store Imigran in a closed container at room temperature. Avoid storing your treatment in direct light, moisture, heat, freezer, or fridge.

Once your treatment has reached its expiry date, ensure you dispose of it. Always, ask your healthcare provider how to dispose of your expired treatment.

Always keep your medicine out of children's reach.

Just like other treatments, you will experience side effects after taking Imigran migraine relief. Consult your doctor once you notice the believed side effects.

Serious or rare side effects affect 1 in 1000 people. You may notice a change in liver function after taking Imigran medicine. Inform your pharmacist once you experience a liver problem.
