Nystatin oral suspension is a antifungal medicine that treats fungal or yeast infections in your mouth (oral thrush) and throat. This infection causes white, raised lesions (spots) on your cheeks and tongue.

This medication is available with prescription only and taken by mouth with a marked dropper, ensuring each dose is taken as directed.

What is Nystatin Oral Suspension and what is it used for?

Nystatin belongs to a group of mediation called antifungals. It is an easy-to-use and fast-acting drug that treats thrush, fungal, or yeast infections in your mouth, throat, or gut. This medication is not best for bacterial or viral infections. Nystatin product is available in the form of:

  • Suspension (for oral thrush of the mouth and throat)
  • Tablet (for candidiasis infection in the gut)
  • Cream or ointment (Nystatin mixed with steroids, antiseptics, or antibacterials)

Nystan Oral Suspension is used to treat:

Certain fungal infections in your mouth and throat cause white patches on the tongue, in the mouth, and sometimes in the throat. Nystatin works by targeting and getting rid of the Candida yeast that causes it.

❇️ Fungal Infections of the Digestive Tract:

Nystatin isn’t just for mouth infections. It also treats yeast infections that have spread further down into your throat (esophagus), stomach, and intestines. It’s especially helpful when the infection has become stubborn, either by spreading beyond the mouth or not responding to other antifungal medicines—meaning the fungus has become resistant to them.

How is Nystatin used to treat fungal infections?

Nystatin is taken orally and it targets the source of the fungal infection directly i.e. Candida species. It is taken 4 times a day and shows noticeable results within 1-2 days of use.

How to take Nystan Oral Suspension for thrush?

You must use Nystatin Oral Suspension according to your doctor’s guidelines such as:

  • Before using it, shake the bottle well.
  • Use a specially measured dropper to extract every dose correctly.
  • Put one-half of the dose in each side of your mouth, swirl it around your mouth for 30 seconds, and gargle.
  •  After this, swallow it or spit it out as directed by your doctor.
  • Take your medication regularly.
  • Do not take more or less than the prescribed dose.

Do not skip the doses or stop taking it without your doctor’s advice.

  • Never share your medicine with others as it can harm them
  • Take medication after meal times so that food or drink does not wash out the medicine too soon. 
  • Do not eat or drink anything for 30 minutes after using the medicine.

How does Nystan oral suspension work for oral thrush?

Nystatin targets Candida species and treats oral thrush in such a way that:

  • It binds to ergosterol, a main component of fungal cell membranes.
  • The binding disrupts the integrity of the fungal cell membrane and makes it leaky and porous.
  • This effect leads to the death of fungal cells.

Nystatin 30 ml is taken orally by mouth, offering direct contact with infected areas in your mouth. This medicine also does not enter into your bloodstream, making it safe and effective for localized treatment of oral thrush.

How long Nystatin Oral Suspension take to work?

Nystatin oral suspension starts working within 2-3 days of using it. It improves symptoms such as discomfort, white patches, or difficulty swallowing within a few days.

However, you must complete its course as prescribed by your doctor to ensure the infection is fully cleared and avoid recurrence.

If your symptoms persist or get worse after a week of using this medicine, consult your doctor for further evaluation. 

How long do I need to take Nystan (Nystatin) Oral Suspension?

For oral thrush, you need to take this medicine for a week and also 2 days after this to ensure all the fungus has been killed. Always stick to your doctor’s guidelines and take it as long as your doctor has recommended because if you stop taking it abruptly, it will result in resistance and incomplete eradication of the infection.

Alternatives to Nystatin Oral Suspension

If Nystatin does not suit you, your doctor may prescribe you some other medicines in place of Nystatin such as:

Itraconazole oral solution: Treat fungal infections in your mouth, throat, and esophagus (oral thrush). It is best for resistant fungal infections. 

Fluconazole: Treat and prevent Candida fungal infections. It is best for severe or recurrent cases. 

Daktarin oral gel: It is available over the counter and suitable for adults and children aged over 4 months.

What if I miss a Nystan dose?

If you forget to take Nystatin oral suspension, take it as soon as you remember it. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one and take your next dose at your usual time. Do not take double or extra doses to compensate for the missed one. 

What if I take too much Nystatin Oral Suspension?

If you have taken more than the recommended Nystatin, it is unlikely to harm you or cause any severe side effects. However, very high doses can cause:

  • Severe nausea
  • Gastrointestinal discomfort

In this case, seek emergency help or visit your doctor immediately. 

Dosage

Nystatin Oral Suspension dosing schedule

The dosing schedule of this medicine is determined by your doctor, depending on your condition, type of infection, and other factors. The standard dose of Nystatin oral suspension is:

For adults, children, and babies:

  • To treat oral thrush: 1 ml is taken 4 times a day with a gap of at least 3 hours between doses.
  • To prevent oral thrush: 1 ml is taken 1 or 2 times a day.

Besides this, if you are using Nystatin tablets, then 1 or 2 tablets are taken orally 3 times a day to treat fungal infections.

Although Nystan is a safe medicine, it is not best for everyone. You should not take it if you have these conditions:

  • Diabetes
  • Allergic reaction to nystatin, parabens, ethylenediamine, thimerosal, dyes, other foods, or preservatives
  • Kidney disease
  • Pregnant or trying to get pregnant
  • Breast-feeding
  • Fungal infection in the lungs or on the skin
  • Taking other prescribed or no-prescribed medicines 
  • Sugar intolerance 
  • Tuberculosis (TB) of the skin
  • Nystatin interaction with other medicines

Nystatin suspension may interact with certain prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, supplements, or herbal products, resulting in adverse effects.

If you are taking or recently stopped taking any of these medicines, consult your doctor before taking Nystatin to avoid serious complications:

  • Immunosuppressants such as corticosteroids, cyclosporine, etc.
  • Antifungal drugs such as fluconazole, ketoconazole, itraconazole
  • Anticholinergic medicines

  • Is Nystan Safe for Babies?

  • How to use Nystatin oral suspension for infants?

    For infants, administer Nystatin via a dropper or syringe to ensure optimal delivery of a prescribed dose. Gently apply it inside of the gums, tongue, and cheeks and coat the affected areas.

There is not enough data that can show whether Nystatin can affect your unborn baby or not. So, if you are pregnant or trying to get pregnant, consult your doctor before taking this medicine to avoid serious complications. 

Nystatin and breastfeeding

Nystatin is not thought to be passed into breast milk so, if you are breastfeeding, you can use this medicine. It does not show any side effects in newborns; however, you must consult your doctor before using it for personalized advice. 

Nystatin and fertility

Nystatin does not affect fertility in men or women. For more details, you can consult your doctor. There is no strong evidence that suggests its effects on reproductive health, hormone level, or your ability to conceive.

This medication contains two types of ingredients:

  • Active ingredient: Nystatin, each 1 ml contains 100,000 units of nystatin.

  • Other ingredients: Glycerine, ethanol, methyl parahydroxybenzoate (E-218), sodium hydroxide, flavors, propyl parahydroxybenzoate (E-216), hydrochloric acid, sodium phosphate, sodium carboxymethylcellulose (E-466), sucrose and water.
