Overview

NOTE: After selecting this product, you will need to complete a short assessment, so we can make sure this medication is suitable for you.

Ovex family pack

Four threadworm single tablet treatments are included in the Ovex family pack. Small, white worms that resemble threads that reside in your stomach and are visible in your stool are called threadworms (poo).

Although they are not harmful, they frequently cause itching and irritation around the anus, particularly at night.

The way Ovex tablets function is by preventing the worms from getting the sugars necessary for survival. Ovex kills threadworms with a single dose,

but it does not eliminate the eggs, which can re-infect and spread to other people. Therefore, in order to prevent re-infection,

we highly advise that every member of your family—aside from women who are pregnant or nursing and children under two—take these tablets and receive treatment at the same time.

How to take Ovex?

Chew the tablet or take it whole along with a glass of milk, juice, or water. It can be taken with or without meals. A plastic spoon is included with the liquid if you're taking it to measure the dosage.

Ask your chemist for a spoon if you don't already have one. A kitchen teaspoon won't measure the correct amount, so avoid using one.

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember, if it falls within four hours of the scheduled dose, if you take Ovex twice daily.

Take your next medication at the scheduled time and skip the missed one if you remember more than four hours after your previous dose was supposed to be taken.

Never take two doses to compensate for a missed one.

What are the Symptoms of Threadworms?

The majority of the time, people are unaware of threadworms because of their slight symptoms. A common symptom is severe itching around the anus (or, in females, the vagina). especially at night, when female threadworms might annoy you with their egg-laying.

Some people have reported seeing threadworms in their stools or on their linens and bed clothes at night. These appear to be one-centimetre-long white cotton threads.

Severe infections with threadworms can lead to:

  • Reduced weight
  • Rapid reduction in weight
  • Struggles with falling or staying asleep
  • Bedwetting

In extremely rare circumstances, threadworms may find their way into the liver or urinary tract from outside the intestines.

Threadworms can be observed outside the vagina or womb in extremely uncommon instances in females, including adult women and girls.

FAQ

  • What is Ovex?

Ovex is a brand name for a medication that is used to treat threadworms, which are small, white parasitic worms that live in the intestines.

It is mostly used to treat intestinal infections, such as threadworms (sometimes called pinworms) and other uncommon worm illnesses, such as whipworm, roundworm, and hookworm.

  • Who can use Ovex?

It is available for purchase from pharmacies for both adults and children two years of age and up. For kids six months and older, it's also accessible with a prescription.

  • In what forms is Ovex available?

Ovex comes in two forms: tablets and a suspension. Tablets are typically preferred for older children and adults, while suspension may be more suitable for younger children who may have difficulty swallowing tablets.

  • What is the active ingredient in Ovex and how does it work?

It contains the active ingredient mebendazole, which belongs to a group of medicines called anthelmintics. These medicines work by killing worms in the gut.

  • Is Ovex available over-the-counter?

Ovex is available over-the-counter in many countries, but it is always best to talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking any new medication. This is especially important if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have any other medical conditions.

  • How long after taking Ovex should threadworms disappear?

While Ovex kills the worms, it may take a few days for them to die and be eliminated. You might still see them after treatment.

  • My child is really itchy in their sleep, what can I do to prevent this?

Threadworms lay eggs around the anus at night, causing itching. Keeping the area clean and wearing tight-fitting underwear at night can help.

  • At what age can a child take Ovex?

Ovex is generally not recommended for children under 2 years old. Always consult a doctor before treating young children.

  • Can my child still go to school if they're infected?

Yes, but good hygiene practices are crucial to prevent spreading the infection. Talk to your doctor for advice.

  • Can pinworms go away without treatment?

Pinworms usually do not go away without treatment. The infection continues as long as the adult worms remain in the intestine. Here, they continue to reproduce and lay eggs, making the infection even worse.

Without intervention, intestinal worms will continue to cause discomfort and spread to other family members. Therefore, it is necessary to use appropriate medications and follow strict hygiene practices to eliminate worms and prevent further transmission.

  • How quickly can pinworms be treated?

Threadworms can be treated using medications that have mebendazole. A good example is  Ovex which is available here at Ashcroft Pharmacy.

Ovex begins to work immediately after administration. These drugs work by inhibiting the worms' ability to absorb the sugars necessary for their survival.

As a result, the worms die and are expelled from the body through feces.

Most people feel relief from itching and other symptoms within a few days of starting treatment. It is common practice to administer a second dose of the medication after two weeks to ensure that the newly hatched worms are killed, effectively eliminating the infection.

  • Can you see threadworms in your stool?

Yes, pinworms usually appear in the stool of infected people. These parasites appear as small white thread-like worms, usually about a centimeter long. Detecting pinworms in stool can help confirm the presence of an infection and speed up treatment.

Information

About Worm infections

Worm infections occur when parasitic worms, like roundworms, tapeworms, or flukes, enter the body. This can happen through things like eating contaminated food, drinking dirty water, or walking barefoot on contaminated soil.

Once inside, these worms can cause various symptoms, such as stomach pain, diarrhea, and fatigue, depending on the type of worm and the severity of the infection.

Preventing worm infections involves simple practices like washing hands before eating, drinking clean water, and avoiding contact with contaminated soil.

In areas where worm infections are common, periodic deworming treatments may be necessary. If someone gets infected, treatment typically involves taking medication that kills and expels the worms from the body.
