About Mounjaro injection
Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a new FDA-approved medication for long-term weight management in people with a BMI of 30+ (obesity) or 27+ (overweight) who also have a weight-related condition
like high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, or high cholesterol. It works best when combined with a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity.
In the US, it's known as Zepbound, and in the UK, it's called Mounjaro. Mounjaro helps people with type 2 diabetes control their blood sugar.
You can expect to lose around 15-20% of your starting body weight with treatment, making it the most effective GLP-1 medication available so far.
Who can use the Mounjaro weight loss pen?
Mounjaro kwikpen is suitable for weight loss if you have:
- ✅ a BMI of at least 30 kg/m2 (obesity)
- ✅ a risk factor or weight-related health issue (such as high blood pressure) along with a BMI of 27 kg/m2 or more (overweight).
Mounjaro, a formulation of Tirzepatide, is intended for patients who have these risk factors:
- ✅ Type 2 diabetes
- ✅ High cholesterol levels
- ✅ Obstructive apnoea during sleep
- ✅ High blood pressure (Sources)
How does Mounjaro (Tirazepatide) work?
Tirzepatide is the active component of Mounjaro. Tirzepatide is a member of the GLP-1 agonist medication class. These medications function similarly to the natural GLP-1 hormone, which is secreted in the gut following a meal and controls appetite.
It makes you feel satiated and less hungry. This may cause you to consume fewer calories, which will cause you to lose weight. Controlling your diet can make the results even more effective.
Additionally, Mounjaro helps keep extra sugar from being turned into fat, which lowers the amount of fat that the body stores.
How effective is Mounjaro for weight loss?
The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) authorized Mounjaro in November 2023 for weight loss.
It can be purchased in UK pharmacies with a prescription as of February 2024. It is available at Ashcroft Pharmacy.
After using Mounjaro pens to decrease appetite, you should expect to lose between 15 and 20% of your starting body weight (who maintain at 15mg).
Out of all the GLP-1 drugs that have been made available, this one is the most successful.
Mounjaro 2.5 mg and 5 mg (lower strengths) won't produce the best outcomes. The main goal of these dosages is to enable your body to adjust to the medication without suffering from severe side effects, but some weight loss will be evident.
If Mounjaro isn’t suitable for me, are there any good alternatives as Mounjaro injecton?
Whether Mounjaro (tirzepatide) injection is suitable for you depends on various factors, including your medical history and treatment goals.
Generally, Tirzepatide injections are recommended for individuals who have unsuccessfully tried to lose weight through exercise and diet alone. In the UK, there are other GLP-1 drugs and weight-loss medications available.
Your doctor may suggest other medications to support your weight loss journey. As alternatives to Mounjaro, they might recommend Wegovy and Saxenda, which are similar weight-loss injections to Mounjaro.
They may also suggest Orlistat and XENICAL capsules that help your body eliminate extra fat from your diet.
What should I consider when choosing between Wegovy, Mounjaro, and Saxenda?
Saxenda, Wegovy, and Mounjaro are weight loss medications with different active ingredients and mechanisms. Saxenda (liraglutide) and Wegovy (semaglutide) are GLP-1 receptor agonists, with Saxenda requiring daily injections and Wegovy weekly.
Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a dual-action medication targeting both GLP-1 and GIP receptors, also with weekly injections.
Mounjaro has shown greater weight loss effectiveness but has less long-term safety data compared to the others.
Your choice should be based on personal health needs and preferences and should be discussed with your healthcare provider.
Is Mounjaro better than Wegovy?
Wegovy and Mounjaro are both weekly injections for weight loss. Mounjaro, which works with GLP-1 and GIP, has shown better results but is newer, so long-term data is limited.
Wegovy works with GLP-1 alone and has more safety data. Your best choice depends on your situation and should be discussed with your doctor.
If Wegovy or Saxenda is effective, keep using it. Plateaus in weight loss are normal.
What are the alternatives for Mounjaro tirzepatide?
Other GLP-1 medications can be purchased in the UK as Mounjaro substitutes, such as:
- Wegovy (semaglutide)
- Saxenda Weight Loss Pen
- Ozempic

Directions
How to use Mounjaro injection pens for weight loss?
When using the Mounjaro KwikPen, it’s important to follow your doctor’s instructions carefully. The dosage can be 2.5 mg, 5 mg, 7.5 mg, 10 mg, 12.5 mg, or 15 mg, depending on what your treatment plan calls for.
Always use the pen exactly as directed by your healthcare provider.
✅ This treatment should be taken in conjunction with a well-balanced, calorie-controlled/nutritional diet. No more than 30% of your calories should come from fat and your diet should generally be rich in fruit and vegetables.
✅ You need to ensure to keep good levels of hydration by drinking 8-11 cups of liquid per day (2.7L)
✅ The injection for weight loss medication must be administered using the following method: Inject your dose of medication under the skin (subcutaneous injection) in your stomach area (abdomen), upper leg (thigh),
or upper arm, as instructed by your healthcare provider. Do not inject into a vein or muscle. Never share your pen or needles with another person. You may give an infection to them, or get an infection from them.
✅ If you want to use Mounjaro to lose weight, you need to inject the dose once a week at the same time and on the same day. This lessens the possibility of adverse effects and boosts the efficacy of Tirzepatide by stabilizing its bloodstream levels.
Always carefully follow your doctor's instructions for the safe injection of Mounjaro. A simplified method of the injection technique is provided here:
✅ Determine the area where to inject the medication (preferably thigh or abdomen)
Wash your hands
✅ Get the Mounjaro pen ready, make sure the liquid appears as it should, and make sure it isn't broken or expired
✅ Attach a new needle
✅ As you hear two clicks, turn the dosage knob slowly
✅ To ensure that the pen is operating properly, prime it to expel air bubbles
Select the advised dosage
✅ Insert the needle, press the dosage knob down, and count to 5
✅ Once the needle has been removed from your skin, see if the dose count has returned to "0."
✅ Take out the needle and put the pen cap back on.
Mounjaro (tirzepatide) injection dose titration schedule:
❇️ Tirzepatide is a clear to slightly yellow solution available in pre-filled, single-dose pens in 6 strengths, including 2.5 mg/5 mg/7.5 mg/10 mg/12.5 mg/15 mg.
❇️ Gradual titration of Tirzepatide (Mounjaro) is recommended to allow the body to adjust to the medication and minimize potential side effects.
❇️ Start with 2.5 mg once weekly for the first 4 weeks.
❇️ Increase to 5 mg once weekly for at least 4 weeks.
❇️ Further increases in 2.5 mg increments can be made every 4 weeks (i.e., 7.5 mg, 10 mg, 12.5 mg, and up to 15 mg), based on the patient’s response and tolerability.
⚠️ After reaching the target dose (usually 15 mg), it may be maintained or adjusted based on individual responses and goals.
What is the suggested site to inject Mounjaro KwikPen?
For the Mounjaro KwikPen, the recommended injection sites are:
- ✅ Stomach (Abdomen)
- ✅ Thigh
- ✅ Upper Arm
❇️ Mounjaro pens are typically injected into the abdomen or upper legs. This area provides good absorption and minimizes the risk of injection site reactions.
⚠️ If you choose to inject in your abdomen, leave at least a 5cm gap from the belly button. To avoid soreness, choose a new section of skin every week, even if it's in the same area.

FAQ
How much weight did individuals regain after discontinuing tirzepatide?
After the initial 36 weeks, individuals who continued taking tirzepatide experienced an additional 5% reduction in body weight over the subsequent 52 weeks.
Conversely, those who received the placebo regained 14% of their body weight.
What is type 2 diabetes?
Type 2 diabetes is a chronic condition that affects how your body regulates blood sugar. Unlike Type 1 diabetes, where the body's immune system attacks the cells that produce insulin, in Type 2 diabetes, the body either doesn't produce enough insulin or doesn't use it effectively.
Symptoms of Type 2 Diabetes:
While some people with Type 2 diabetes may experience no symptoms, common signs and symptoms include:
- ✅ Increased thirst: Feeling constantly thirsty, even after drinking fluids
- ✅ Frequent urination: Needing to urinate more often, especially at night
- ✅ Extreme hunger: Feeling hungry, even shortly after eating
- ✅ Unexplained weight loss: Losing weight without trying
- ✅ Blurred vision: Difficulty focusing
- ✅ Slow-healing sores: Cuts and bruises that take longer to heal
- ✅ Fatigue: Feeling tired and weak
- ✅ Tingling or numbness in the hands or feet: A condition called neuropathy
Complications of Type 2 Diabetes:
Untreated or poorly managed Type 2 diabetes can lead to serious health complications, including:
- ✅ Heart disease and stroke: High blood sugar can damage blood vessels and nerves, increasing the risk of heart attack, stroke, and other cardiovascular problems.
- ✅ Kidney disease: Diabetes can damage the kidneys, leading to kidney failure.
- ✅ Nerve damage (neuropathy): High blood sugar can damage nerves, causing numbness, tingling, pain, and weakness, often in the feet and legs.
- ✅ Eye damage (retinopathy): Diabetes can damage the blood vessels in the retina, leading to vision loss and blindness.
- ✅ Foot damage: Nerve damage and poor blood flow can lead to foot ulcers and infections, which may require amputation.
- ✅ Increased thirst: Feeling constantly thirsty, even after drinking fluids
What happens if I stop taking Mounjaro injections?
✅ This implies that you will start to feel hungry once more, and if you were taking it to control your blood sugar, your levels will probably go back to what they were before you started taking it.
✅ If you wish to discontinue taking Mounjaro, you should talk to your doctor. They might advise gradually lowering your dosage. You risk gaining back any weight you've lost if you quit Mounjaro too soon.
✅ In order to prolong the duration of a lower dose, it is advisable to adhere to the prescribed dosing schedule and consult your doctor if you experience any negative effects.
Should I take Mounjaro with food?
Since Mounjaro is not taken by mouth, you can take it with or without food. Establish a routine that suits your needs.
Can Mounjaro be used long-term?
As a long-term treatment for type 2 diabetes and weight loss, Mounjaro is safe. If you're using Mounjaro to lose weight, you should typically continue taking it until your goals are met.
If you aren't losing weight as expected or if your side effects are too severe, your doctor may decide to stop you on Mounjaro.
How long does it take for Mounjaro to work?
Mounjaro should begin working right away, however it can take a few weeks for this medication to take full action. This is a result of a gradual increase in Mounjaro dosage intended to minimize unwanted effects.
What Foods Should You Avoid While Taking Mounjaro?
❇️ While no known foods have been found to interact with Mounjaro, there are several foods you should stay away from if you want the best possible outcomes. Ideally, one should refrain from:❇️ Food items that are high in sugar, such as sweets, biscuits, cakes, fizzy drinks, etc.
❇️ Vegetables and fruits with a high glycaemic index, as these may elevate blood sugar levels, such as pineapple, watermelon, mango, overripe bananas, potatoes, and sweetcorn.
❇️ Fried foods, such as burgers, pizza, fries, etc. tend to have harmful fats and can increase the possibility of experiencing nausea when using Mounjaro.
Can multiple Mounjaro injections be combined to make a larger dose?
Combining multiple Mounjaro injections to create a larger dose is not recommended. There is no clinical evidence or information supporting this practice.
Eli Lilly, the manufacturer, does not provide guidance on combining multiple tirzepatide injections, as it has not been studied in clinical trials.
