Ozempic vs. Mounjaro: Massive 20,000 Participant Study Reveals Dramatic Weight Loss Results

Ibuprofen - Uses, Side Effects, and More

Many people are fighting against obesity and weight-related diseases like diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Certain weight management drugs have become a powerful and effective tool, allowing weight loss and an improvement in their lifestyle.

In weight loss management, there are two medications which have become the centre of attention: Ozempic and Mounjaro.

But which one is more effective?

The landmark real-world study focused on real-world patients who were overweight or obese, where over 18000 adults were involved, comparing their first year of treatment.
Let’s explore more and figure out which one is the winner!

How Was This Study Designed?

In this study, published in JAMA Internal Medicine, adults with overweight or obesity were identified using electronic health data from US health care systems. 18.386 participants of different ages, ethnicities, and genders were included from diverse backgrounds. They were receiving either Semaglutide or Tirzepatide between May 2022 and September 2023. The patients included in this study had regular interaction with the healthcare system, and their baseline weight was known and included.

Which one is the winner: Ozempic or Mounjaro?

Ozempic

Ozempic is used to treat type 2 diabetes. It contains an active ingredient called semaglutide and acts as an agonist to the GLP-1 receptor.

It regulates blood sugar levels, suppresses appetite, and enhances insulin secretion, managing diabetes and reducing weight.

Ozempic mimics the GLP-1 receptor, regulating your food intake and appetite. It slows down your digestion process and offers feelings of fullness for longer, managing your weight effectively.

Ozempic mimics the GLP-1 receptor, regulating your food intake and appetite. It slows down gastric emptying and offers feelings of fullness for longer, managing your weight effectively. Moreover, it also enhances insulin secretion once you eat something, regulating your blood sugar level efficiently.

Participants who received the weekly injections of Ozempic medicine experienced significant weight loss. They lost 12-15% of their initial weight along with improvements in insulin sensitivity, lipid profiles, and blood glucose levels.

Mounjaro

Mounjaro is a brand name for the generic drug, tirzepatide, which is used for weight loss in the UK. It is highly effective in long-term weight loss management and mimics GLP-1 and GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide) receptors. The dual action makes the mounjaro kwikpen more effective in improving metabolic health and promoting weight loss.

Mounjaro’s dual agonist approach makes it different from other weight loss medications on the market.

It is given at a higher dose and targets GLP-1 and GIP receptors, enhancing insulin secretion in response to meals, suppressing your hunger, and lowering the digestive process. These actions make it more effective for obese and diabetic patients.

However, participants who took Mounjaro lost 15-20% of their initial body weight and found this drug more efficient than Ozempic.

Mounjaro was the clear winner for weight loss goals: 82 percent of its patients lost at least 5 per cent of their weight, while only 66 percent of Ozempic patients did.

The dual agonist action of Mounjaro offered many other advantages, like reduced visceral fat and waist circumference, making it a potent drug for weight loss.
However, this study did not evaluate whether or not the participants who lost weight regained any weight.

Other major randomised controlled trials, such as the SURMOUNT-1 and STEP trials, showed similar results.

Consistency with Previous Research: The landmark study's results align well with earlier randomised controlled trials (RCTs).

Tirzepatide Effectiveness: In trials where Tirzepatide was compared to a placebo:

In placebo-controlled trials, Tirzepatide at 10 mg per week led to 82% of patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) and 96% of those without T2D losing 5% or more of their body weight by 72 weeks.https://www.ashcroftpharmacy.co.uk/uploads/Charts A-C) Show that tirzepatide (Mounjaro)

In similarly designed trials, semaglutide at 2.4 mg per week resulted in 73% of individuals with T2D and 92% of those without T2D achieving the same weight loss by 68 weeks.

Head-to-head trial data are limited, but one study found that 5% weight loss was achieved by 69% of T2D patients on mounjaro 5 mg per week, compared to 58% on semaglutide (1 mg per week).

 Bottom Line:

What is Better for Weight Loss: Mounjaro or Ozempic?
This massive study compared Ozempic and Moujaro with almost 20,000 participants, offering valuable insights into the efficiency, side effects, and safety of these two weight loss drugs.

Both medications were effective in weight management; however, Mounjaro proved to be more effective due to its dual action.
Moreover, the future of obesity treatment depends on combined therapy, personalised approaches, and continuous research, unveiling innovative solutions and making them approachable to many.

Final Thoughts

Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro are effective weight loss drugs, but their selection depends on an individual's age, health profile, other medications, and weight loss goals.
Although Mounjaro shows more effectiveness than Ozempic, Ozempic will remain an efficient drug for those who want weight loss along with diabetes management.
So, consult with your health care professional and figure out the most appropriate treatment to achieve a healthy weight and lifestyle.
